How to clean beer glasses?

So you have entered into the world of learning how to brew your own beer (maybe going to a place such as The Beer Shed, a small scale brewery in Campbelltown) and now you want to take your beer home and drink it.  You’ve got all the equipment necessary - a beer fridge, maybe even a kegerator.  You even went the extra mile and purchased some glasses that will only be used for drinking beer.  Now it is time to get those glasses ‘beer clean’.  Yes that is a real term, although it is primarily used in bars and pubs and not so much by the average bloke on the street.

You can wash a beer glass like you do any other glass you own.  However, if you do, you won’t be getting the full-flavour experience when you next pour a glass of your home brew.  Detergents can leave a residue, or film, on the glass that will interact with the beer when you pour it.  To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, here’s a couple of tips on what to do, and what not to do, to get your glasses ‘beer clean’.

Don’t use a standard detergent to wash your beer glasses.  Detergents can contain glycerin and different fats that can have a nasty interaction with your beer.  Also those fats and glycerin can cause a smaller head on your beer, which in turn affects the taste experience.

Use baking soda and water to form a paste and apply this paste to the inside of your beer glass; use a bottle brush to gently scrub the glass and then rinse it out completely in cold filtered water.  If you have hard water or even treated water, it can leave mineral deposits or a film on your glass, rendering it substandard and not beer clean.  After rinsing your now clean beer glasses, turn them upside down on a dish drying rack and allow it to air dry.  Some people will just place a clean dry towel on the counter and place the cleaned glasses on it, but you should avoid this practice.  You need air flow for the glasses to dry properly, so a drying rack is the best way to go.  You don’t want to towel-dry your beer glasses because you increase the chances of placing debris in or on your glasses, and as everyone knows, that is not ‘beer clean’.

If you don’t want to take the time to DIY your cleaning solution by using the baking soda method, you can purchase cleaning solutions that are tailor-made for getting your glasses and bottles beer clean. MacArthur’s The Beer Shed is a great place to start asking questions and making your purchases.

Whatever method you choose, make sure to inspect your glasses after they have dried.  If there are water spots on your glasses, then they are not beer clean and need to be rewashed.  If your beer glasses start to look cloudy no matter how much you wash them, then you should look into purchasing new glasses.  The cloudy appearance means that the glass has become scratched and etched on a microscopic level.  These scratches are a breeding ground for nasty-tasting bacteria.

Make sure you follow these dos and don’ts so that the next time you pour your mate a glass of your own brew, the glass will be beer clean and the taste will be out of this world!

Which beer goes with what Beer styles and food pairings

It is hard to believe for some, but to put it simply, all beers are not created equal.  Everyone has their own tastes and preferences, but most people will like a range of beers and flavour profiles.  Some beers are great to drink with some of the lads at the pub and others go well with pizza or Italian food.  But how do you know which beer goes with what food?  Are there beer and food pairing rules, like there is with wine? Here you will know that how brew your own beer. Should you order a Stout, Pale Ale or Pilsner when eating chicken?  Here are a few general suggestions that may help you in answering these questions.

In the past, wine experts put forth all kinds of rules about which wine to drink with which food, and anyone that did it differently was just part of the uneducated (and probably unwashed) masses.  However, in recent years the old ‘snobby’ way of thinking went by the wayside; now people are told to drink whatever wine they like with their food, and not to worry about the pairings held forth by the so called ‘experts’.  The same thing is true of beer.  Drink what you like with whatever you like to eat; it is totally up to you.  However, as was stated earlier, all beers are not created equal.  What this means is that some beers do pair better with certain foods, as a general and somewhat subjective rule.

Your tastes may be different than your mates, so you make the final decision.  What most people tend to agree on is that if you are eating something ‘light’, such as chicken, chances are a Stout (with its strong flavour profile) will probably be a bit too much and get in the way of the meal.   A better choice for ‘lighter’ foods, like chicken and salads is a Pale ale or a classic Pilsner beer, unless of course you don’t like Pale Ales or Pilsners, then go with what you like.

Beer styles are so varied and taste so different that there can probably tend to be millions of combinations that will work.  That is good news for the food and beer lover; you get to experiment for the rest of your life!  Just imagine the possibilities and have a go!

When it comes to food pairings and beer styles the basic ‘rule of thumb’ is the stronger the taste of the beer, the stronger the flavour of the food needs to be.  The lighter or more ‘bland’ the food, the less strong the beer should be.  When considering beer styles like Brown Ales, Porters, Stouts, Lagers and Dark Lagers, consider pairing them with rich, bold, spicy, intense foods.  Then think of the flavour of each beer and see if you can pick anything out that might go well with a favourite dish.  Try them together and see.  It doesn’t have to be hard work, but it is something that you and your mates can all do together and the great part is that you don’t all have to agree - everyone can be right!

Remember, pair the food you like with the beer styles you like and then experiment.  Beer isn’t supposed to be work; it is supposed to be fun!

How to properly pour a beer.

If you are one of the many people that brew your own beer, then there are a few tips that you might want to consider to make your experience all the better.  One of those tips is know how to properly pour a beer.  While many people might find this a bit over the top, there are good reasons to know how to pour a proper glass of beer.

The first tip may seem obvious, but too many people don’t take the time to consider it:  temperature.  Having your beer chilled to the proper temperature is a key component in enjoying your drinking experience.  No one likes a lukewarm beer and you probably don’t want a case of brain freeze from a beer that is too cold.  There are too many varieties and their corresponding temperatures to list here, but you might check with a quality small scale brewery, such as The Beer Shed in Campbelltown, to find out the particulars.

Now that your home brew is at the ideal temperature, you need something to put it in.  You might not be aware that the glass from which you drink your beer can have a great impact on the taste of the beer.  Make sure that you have a good clean glass to pour your beer into.  Make sure the glass doesn’t have any spots or cracks that could affect the head of the beer.

Now that the temperature and the vessel are ready, it is time to pour.  Don’t pop the crown and just start dumping the beer into the glass - take your time.  Start by tipping the glass towards the bottle or tap, somewhere around 45 degrees or so.  What you are trying to do is keep the foamy head from getting too large too fast.  You do want some head on your beer so after you reach the halfway point start moving the glass back to the 90 degree point, and pour the beer into the centre of the glass.  You should have a nice head by the time you’re finished pouring.

Many people aren’t sure why the head is desirable.  They probably haven’t thought about the human nose.  The nose is the thing that allows us the ability to taste things properly.  In fact, some research has indicated that the nose is responsible for a large portion of the taste experience.  The head contains all the subtle aromas that help you taste the intricacies of a particular beer.  Too large a head will mean that the beer will taste flat, because most of the carbonation was used to create the head.  Too little a head will limit the amount of flavour you taste.

Remember, temperature is the key.  You might consider purchasing some equipment like beer fridges, kegerators or keg systems to help you get the right temp and carbonation.

Don’t forget the glassware.  If you’re in the Macarthur region, then you should stop by The Beer Shed in Campbelltown and talk to one of the friendly people there about what kind of beer you brew and what type of glass will work the best for you.

Take the time to pour properly.  If you follow the tips above you should have a great glass of beer.
